Upgrading to Windows 10

IMPORTANT UPDATE:  Microsoft has become significantly more aggressive in trying to push the Windows 10 update to users as of late.  If Windows prompts you and asks "Do you want to upgrade to Windows 10 now or sometime in the future" - both options are considered consent and by choosing to upgrade "in the future", Windows will apply the update at some unknown point in the coming days.  For many Windows 10 is great but it's an unpleasant surprise if you are not expecting it.

If you want to ensure you avoid the upgrade then you can use 3rd parties tools like the Gwx Control Panel which you can download here or you can give a call or email and we can help.  If the Windows 10 update gets applied and you want to revert it, it is possible but laborious.  The best thing to do is to get ahead of it if possible.


RITE has done testing with Microsoft RMS and Widows 10 and overall it appears to work pretty well. If the computer is being used as a back-office manager station, with no add-ons, there are few known issues. If you are using any add-ons, we would recommend doing careful testing first.

We do not recommend upgrading to Windows 10 on any POS stations because macros (ie quick tender keys) will no longer work. RITE has an alternative way to do this, but it may require moving the location of the buttons and changing how the POS screen looks

We have tested the current versions of the most popular RITE applications with Windows 10. RITE can’t guarantee every version of every application will work. Because of this, we would need to do a special test specific to your environment and the versions you use to be confident that there will be no issues at this time.  Over the next 2 to 3 months we will be working to confirm any issues and test all applications, settings, and functionality to ensure it works well on Windows 10.  For the sake of stability our recommendation over the foreseeable future will be to stick with Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 for all POS and database stations.

If you are looking at upgrading any computers to Windows 10, we would recommend scheduling a time with us in advance, as it would require the reactivation of all RITE applications.

Lastly, we strongly recommend using version 2.0.2000 or greater when upgrading to Windows 10 as this is where we've focused our testing efforts and that version does contain fairly major updates that may impact operating system compatibility.

  1. If using RITE's plugins on a computer, all applications will need to be reactivated.
  2. POS macros will not function currently.  There are alternatives for tender based macros and RITE can assist you with this at our standard hourly rate or through your support package.
  3. In one instance we have witnessed a strange interaction between the display drivers and RMS where the screen resolution changes every time the POS opens.
  4. Printer shares need to be reconfigured.
  5. Firewall rules on database server need to be reconfigured.
